Prayer Leading Tips

It can be a bit scary leading prayers on a microphone but hopefully these tips can help

PRACTICAL TIPS

Using the mic – keep it close and flat when talking and avoid walking too near any PA speakers. Keep hold of it unless someone else is using it and stay at the front until you are finished. You are part of a team so also be aware of the worship leader and worship team – feel free to communicate with them and to bounce off each other.

Welcome – Purpose – Passage – Pray – Participate

WELCOME: Introduce the subject and welcome people to the room if new people have joined. Explain what is happening and recognise that it might be somebody’s first time in the room.

PURPOSE: explain what you are praying for and how – be specific

PASSAGE: Use a bible passage as the foundation of your prayer

PRAY: pray to God – it’s easy to get distracted! Be yourself, but also be aware of the language you use to best enable people to join you. Have ONE specific focus and repeat it so it’s clear. Don’t go too long because…

PARTICIPATE: Our heart is to engage and teach others. We don’t tell people what to do but we invite people to engage in some way. Be clear, be specific, be creative, and invite as a peer - as a brother/sister. Repeat the invite.

But be Spirit-led (as a team). We want to learn to be always looking for what the Spirit is doing. Have a plan but be willing to change it. Jesus seemed to heal people differently every time – he did what he saw the Father doing. Mud and spit - some of Jesus’ methods are pretty unusual by modern standards. We need to ‘watch and pray’. (Mat 26:41)
